Pizzeria owner in mice-planting case to seek psychiatric test
Upper Darby, PA, United States (AHN) – A pizzeria owner accused of trying to release mice in rival restaurants in southeastern Pennsylvania has been ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Nickolas Galiatsatos, owner of Nina’s Bella Pizzeria in Upper Darby, was released on $10,000 bail on Tuesday and required to have a mental evaluation, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.
The 47-year old was caught the previous day after throwing a bag containing mice in the trash can of Uncle Nick’s Pizza. Moments before he did that, he allegedly went into nearby Verona Pizza and requested to use the bathroom, where he hid another bag of mice in the ceiling.
The owner of Verona Pizza, Fanis Facas, told WPVI-TV he became suspicious of noise from the bathroom so he went to check after Galiatsatos left. Footprints on the toilet seat prompted Facas to open the ceiling, where he found a bag that held a handful of mice.
Two police officers having lunch at Verona Pizza at the time arrested Galiatsatos just as the suspect left Nick’s Pizza.
Galiatsatos has been arraigned on charges of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, harassment and cruelty to animals.
His unusual plan to improve his business has been condemned as “food terrorism” yet has generated amusement among pizza lovers.
“Large pie, extra mice,” said a Verona customer, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“Just because it works for the Chuck E. Cheese brand doesn’t mean mice and pizza should always go together,” blogger Kim Conte wrote.
The Philadelphia Daily News featured a photo of the “victimized mice,” which appeared to be unharmed despite their ordeal. One mouse reportedly died at the attempted “sabotage” at Uncle Nick’s.
