Free Slurpees Monday at 7-11 stores

Diane Alter – AHN News Trivia Writer
United States (AHN) – If it’s free, they will come. Monday, July 11, the nation’s largest convenience store chain, 7-11, is expecting to give away as many as 5 million 7.11 ounce Slurpees across the nation. That amounts to roughly 1,000 free Slurpees per store. There is no catch; no coupons are needed; and no questions will be asked. The only question is in the mind of Nancy Smith, vice president of marketing for 7-11: How much will sales increase for the day? When the company handed out 4.5 million free Slurpees last July 11, sales spiked 38 percent. It seems that after customers got a small sample of the drink, they were willing to buy more. Smith said, “Slurpee drinkers are some of the most loyal fans we have. They come here to have fun.” They can also [...] Continue Reading…

Postal Service stops pension fund payments

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor
Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – The U.S. Postal Service plans to suspend payments to a pension fund, the latest step the cash-strapped agency is taking while it continues to push for legislation to adjust mandatory payments for employee benefits. In a statement on Wednesday, the Postal Service said it would stop its weekly $115 million contribution for the Federal Employees Retirement System annuity on Friday. The decision will save the agency about $800 million in the current fiscal year. It will have little effect on the pension fund, for which the Postal Service has an overpayment of $6.9 billion. Access to the surplus fund is one of the issues the agency has asked of Congress. In addition, the agency is seeking a bill giving it authority to determine frequency of mail delivery as well as ending pre-payments for retiree health [...] Continue Reading…

Carstens seeks support of developing nations to remove European hold on top IMF post

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News
New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The battle to fill the top International Monetary Fund post vacated by the resignation of Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn has apparently been reduced to a war between Europe and developing nations. Mexico’s Central Bank Governor, Agustin Carstens, took the struggle to a higher level on Tuesday by seeking the vote of developing countries to counter the solid support enjoyed by French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde from European nations. Even the U.S. is apparently siding with Europe’s choice in a tit-for-tat political arrangement to ensure Washington keeps its grip on the top spot at the World Bank and the number two post in IMF. Carstens criticized European leaders for imposing Lagarde on the rest of the world. The governor said that if the selection of Strauss-Kahn’s replacement would be treated as “business as usual,” changes would [...] Continue Reading…
