10-Year-Old Girl in Spain Gives Birth
Lebrija, Spain (AHN) – A 10-year-old girl, named Elena in southern Spain gave birth to a baby and authorities are unsure what to do with the infant. The child was born in the Andalusia region of Spain to a Romanian family.
Elena flew to Spain from Romania three weeks ago to give birth and attend a family wedding.
The baby named Nicoletta was born at a hospital in Jerez de la Frontera last week. The father is also believed to be a minor, aged 13. Authorities are now deciding whether the mother and her family can retain custody of the infant.
According to the Andalucia daily, Diario de Jerez, which first reported the story, Olimpia, the grandmother of Elena can’t understand the wide level of interest in the case as “this is the age we get married in Romania.”
She also said, “Elena and Nicoletta will stay in Spain because her relationship with the baby’s father has ended. They’ve separated.”
“Elena is very happy with her child. We’re very happy, for us it’s not a drama.”
She was seen in a photograph smiling outside of the family’s modest apartment building they share in the 25,000 person town of Lebrija. The infant and child are being cared for by family residing in the apartment.
According to official statistics 178 girls under the age of 15 gave birth in Spain in 2008.
